Catalin-Mihai Barbu, M.Sc. (researcher)
Catalin-Mihai Barbu is working as a full member in the automotive group. He is currently involved in the projects GETHOMESAFE, SEMA, and 3CIXTY.
Catalin first joined DFKI’s Intelligent User Interface (IUI) department in 2008 as a student assistant in the SHAREDLIFE project, where he completed his Master’s thesis under the supervision of Prof. Anthony Jameson and Dr. Alexander Kröner. Although he was tempted to enroll in a PhD program immediately afterwards, he wanted to spend some time working in the industry before committing himself to a career in research. Consequently, in 2009 he moved to Brno (Czech Republic) and was offered a position as software developer in IBM. However, his interest in research never faded: in 2010, he began collaborating with the IBM Research Lab in Zürich on projects and user studies in the areas of User Interface Design and IT Risk Management. In April 2012, he accepted the opportunity to hone his managerial skills by becoming a Business Programs Manager in IBM’s Global Services Excellence team. With almost four years of industry experience, he decided to return full-time to research and pursue a PhD. In 2013, he rejoined DFKI as a researcher.
